Now right off the bat you need to know that I am not a doctor! I am a mom and now a grandmother with a big family and a passion for solving problems rather than just fretting about them.
As a mom, eczema has been frustration for me for a long time. Two of my daughters suffered as children with moderate cases of eczema. Their arms, backs, and backs of their knees were always red with itchy rashes torn open with uncontrollable scratching. Medications caused the skin to be lighter than the surrounding skin, causing additional embarrassment. There were often rude remarks and questions from classmates and uninformed adults. As these daughters grew into teens, the eczema seemed to calm down, but only because they could now apply crèmes and ointments immediately after showering. They also utilized the tricks and tidbits of wisdom we had gleaned from doctors and experience over the years. This and more recent helpful knowledge is what I want to pass on to you--- other parents desperately trying to help your kids who suffer from eczema.
In the summer of 2009, I had my granddaughter visiting for several weeks. She suffers from eczema very similar to my own daughter’s cases when they were young (Her mom, by the way, did not have eczema as a child). Hot summer days were spent in our pool. Sunshine and chlorine began to take a toll on my little granddaughter’s skin. I was putting her to bed one night and realized her face looked like leather. Her skin was so dry and cracked; my heart ached for her. I began putting a crème I have recently discovered on her face- Genes Vitamin E Crème (This is what works for us but you can use whatever works best for you). Her automatic reaction was to cringe because almost all other the counter lotions burn like heck when put on truly sensitive skin and especially irritated skin. She was so surprised because the crème did not burn. A calm came over her as she felt her skin relax. I then rubbed the crème over her arms, legs, chest, back, and feet. But as I looked at the irritated, red raw rash on the backs of her knees and the fold of her elbows, I knew as she slept, the crème would all just wipe off onto the sheets no matter how thickly I applied it.
And then it happened! I have always believed in prayer and inspiration. I was at that moment struck powerfully with an idea. I have a pair of cotton gloves I use on my hands at night when I apply medicine or crème. “How could I make the crème stay where she needed it to be?" The inspiration was clear- make a wrap!
I told her I would be right back. I rushed to my sewing room and got to work. When completed, I then grabbed the four tubes and headed back into my granddaughter. We then put on some medicine and more of the Genes crème. I slipped on the cotton tubes or wraps. My granddaughter found them soft and snug enough not to slide while she slept. The big surprise came when she woke up. We were surprised to find her elbow folds and the backs of her knees looked almost completely healed. It was incredible. The cotton tube wraps had done for her arms and legs what white cotton gloves do for my dry hands. I was ecstatic. For the first time in her life, my granddaughter was experiencing skin that was healing. The redness had almost disappeared.
So there you have my story. Several children have now benefitted from this inspired idea. I am so grateful. On this website, I want parents to be able to order my wraps, be able to access a pattern, or watch a video of how they are made. I just want to communicate the idea clearly. As simple as they are to make, not everyone sews. There are also many other tips I want to share. Wouldn’t it be wonderful for every child with eczema to sleep comfortably through the night?!
